Divergent Book Review

Anyway. Now that I have successfully made your Monday better…

Workout + Breakfast

I ran 3 miles this morning followed by some stretching, because my legs needed to be stretched in a bad way. And, then I did some ab work.

It was a pretty slow pace, but for some reason my legs have felt so heavy on all my runs lately and I don’t know why. I need to find a solution to this problem ASAP, any advice?

When I got back from my run I ate a very un-pretty lopsided breakfast cookie (I added too much milk, and it slid off to one side in the fridge, oops) that went un pictured. I think if you would have judged me if you saw what it looked like.

Divergent Book Review

This past weekend I finished another book: Divergent. And I loved it. A few people told me that since I loved the Hunger Games I simply had to read Divergent. And, now I am going to offer the same advice to you guys; if you loved The Hunger Games read this series!

Divergent falls into the Dystopian novel theme. It is set in futuristic Chicago (which isn’t Chicago anymore). The book focuses around the life of a 16 year old girl named Beatrice.

The area is divided into 5 separate factions that are based on your strongest personality traits. The five different factions center around: Bravery, honesty, knowledge, peace, and selflessness. All the children are born into whatever faction their family is in, but when they turn 16 they are required to take an aptitude test that lets them know which faction they personally best match up with, they then have the option to stay where they are and where they have been their wholes lives, or leave their families behind for a faction they feel fits them better.

Beatrice takes her aptitude test and finds out she is not like most people, and she doesn’t fit in with just one particular faction; instead, she is divergent. She spends the whole book trying to figure out where she belongs and attempting to understand what is so dangerous about being divergent, all while the society around her is secretly beginning to fall to pieces.

The book has a perfect mix of action, suspense, and romance (my favorite). I would definitely recommend it. I already bought the second book in the series (Insurgent), and can’t wait to crack it open on the plane to Israel next week.

In other news: in case you didn’t know I’m a life saver. This is the third turtles I have saved from the middle of the road this Summer. Oh, and I named him Tobias after my favorite character in Divergent ;).

Happy Fourth

Happy Fourth of July!

My Fourth of July started with a 5k, the perfect way to start any holiday is with a race, in my opinion.

I almost didn’t start my morning with a race, because I woke up an hour late. Talk about rushed, all I had time to do was brush my teeth and make my peanut butter banana english muffin before I had to sprint out the door to get to the site on time to register. I also had time to take a picture, for you guys :).

Luckily, the race was right by my house so I made it just in the knick of time. But, we were 3 minutes past the registration time and had to smile a little bit to convince the man to let us run ;).

I recruited my friend Kristin for her first ever race. We went to the dollar store last night to get some fancy shmancy festive Fourth of July items to wear. Since I was so rushed this morning I didn’t get to put the fun little red white and blue garland (front the above picture with my bib on) in my hair like I planned to, so I just put the fun spiral red ribbon in my hair, but it didn’t last very long before it fell out :(. Kristin wore a flag on her back the entire race, she def wins most patriotic.

I commend her for keeping that flag on for the entire race. We were sort of disappointed in the lack of red white and blue at this race, I mean come on it is the Fourth of July, people! We counted 3 other festive people besides ourselves, lame. At least her and I represented for the whole group.

I’m not sure what my time was because I wasn’t really paying attention and completely forgot to look at the clock when I crossed. I had my Nike app on but I forgot to shut it off when I finished so it’s not accurate. I’ll let you know my official time when they go up! Though, for some reason this race was difficult for me, I don’t know if it was because I wore my body out with spin class and body pump this week or because I didn’t go to bed early enough last night, who knows. But, I had fun and it was beyond awesome to drag Kristin to her first ever race! So proud of my bestie.

She said she loved it and wants to run more, success!

Happy Summer!!

Happy first day of Summer, friends!

Even though I’ve been on Summer break for more than a month, you better believe I still celebrated this wonderful occasion :). And, it made it just that much better that the first day of Summer included absolutely perfect weather all day long.

I celebrated the first day of Summer with 2 outdoor runs, one in the morning and one just now; this evening! I ran 3 miles both times for a total of 6 miles today… a new record!

The first picture is from my most recent run and the second one is from this morning. Today was Amy’s graduation (Yay Amy!!), so I had to wake up extra early to sneak a run this morning… hence the terrible looking little smiley guy in the above picture, it reads “felt tired”. Well duh I was tired, I woke up at 6 in the morning…. it was terrible. But, as always I was happy I did it after I completed my run.

When I got back from my run I ate a quick peanut butter banana smoothie (shocker), showered, straightened my hair and left for Amy’s graduation. I’ll tell you all about that later this weekend ;).

I also spent my day yesterday doing something fun and Summery, and it resulted in me crossing another thing off of my Summer to-do list, 2 in one week I’m on a roll! I have officially accomplished hiking and picking fresh fruit.

I spent the entire day shopping with my Grandma who just got into town, and then we met my cousin Tammy and her adorable son Joshua (who you guys met on the blog yesterday) at Butler’s Orchard to pick strawberries.

We went right at the end of strawberry season, so the fields were pretty picked over and the majority of the berries that were left were either rotten or bug infested. It was an adventure to find enough strawberries to fill up our box. But, we were on a mission since we were planning on using some berries to bake something for Amy’s party on Saturday.

Joshua was my designated berry picker ;).

He was too cute, he loved picking the strawberries and eating them. Every time we turned around he had another one in his mouth. It’s safe to say his skin was stained red at the end of the day.

When we were done picking we went into the store to pay for our berries and to get some slushies, because they make the best fresh fruit slushies. No lie. I look forward to them all year. The one they had yesterday was apple strawberry. I got mine and Joshua decided he wanted one too, he got so excited when Tammy said he could have one, he even started clapping lol. I let him model it for me ;).

I had a great day with my cousins, and really want to go back to Butlers this Summer for some blueberry picking (my fave). I’ll be back soon with a recap of Amy’s graduation festivities :). Have a great weekend.

Tanning and Target

Good Evening!

I feel like I haven’t written a normal post in such a long time, I’ve been holding out on you guys!

Let me get back on track and fill you in on my day.

I didn’t have to work today, so I woke up around 8:30 and went on a 3 mile hilly run around my neighborhood.

Breakfast

When I got back from my run I ate the Overnight Oats that I prepared the night before. I always add a 1/2 a banana to my overnight oats in the morning, but this morning I came back to a banana-less house. I was depressed. But, then I found a full box of big, fat, juicy blueberries and my depression was instantly lifted :).

After my oats, I gave Spanky another bath (you can see how the last one went here). And, then spent the rest of the day reading The Help, while tanning on my deck. Spanky was catching some rays as well.

Lunch

For lunch I tried to be a little chef and create a seafood salad with the leftover crabs and shrimp from our Father’s Day feast. Did I mention Crabs are my absolute favorite food like ever?

Oh, and old bay on crabs = complete happiness. I remember when I tried to tell 2 of my friends from North Carolina how much I loved Old Bay and they had never heard of it. Um what? They were seriously missing out all their lives. They have obviously have since been forced by me to eat it.

I mixed whole wheat pasta, shrimp, 2 picked crabs, and some avocado. However, it didn’t turn out so well. I don’t think the combination of avocado with seafood was one for my tastebuds. Ya win some ya lose some. I did enjoy eating it on my deck while sunbathing though :).

When my Mom came home we went to Target with a plan to buy just one thing: Divergent. I have been wanting to read it for so long. Everyone whose read it loved it, and said I had to read it! I finally have it and I can’t wait to read it at the beach next week after I finish The Help.

Obviously we bought more than just that book, because it is impossible to go to Target and just buy one thing. I ended up getting the book, a super cute high low blue dress that I am planning to wear on Friday to Amy’s graduation, some more of my favorite Vanilla Whey protein powder, strawberries, and bananas (thank goodness).

After Target we went to Kohls because I needed some new polos for work. Annnnnd again, ended up leaving the store with more than I planned on getting. I also got a cute hot pink running tank and some plain black running shorts. I couldn’t resist :(.

I was so excited about my new running gear I decided to run 2 miles as soon as I got home to test it out. It was another 3 miles plus 2 miles = 5 kinda day.

Now I’m off to watch the episode of Real Housewives of New Jersey I missed from last night, have a good one!

Question for ya: What is your favorite food of all time?!

Mine is a 3-way tie between: anything with peanut butter, crabs, and pasta salad.

 

 

Rainy Baking Day

Remember my running fail from this morning?

Yeah me too.

But, guess what? I have redeemed myself, Stormy Day: 1, Molly:1. We are now even ladies and gentlemen.

I officially ran 5 miles! Well…. Sort of. I ran 2 miles this morning before the heavens so rudely decided to open up on me, and then I waited about an hour and ran 3 more miles. 2 + 3 = 5, right? We can just pretend I ran all those miles consecutively ;).

I almost didn’t run the extra 3, I was feeling sleepy and just kept using excuses like: It’s just going to start raining again, my breakfast hasn’t digested yet, I’m super tired since I woke up at 7:30.

But, when I actually went to lay down and take a nap I felt guilty and knew my body wasn’t going to let me sleep (stupid brain). So I laced up my running shoes. I went out to run 2 miles, and while I was running I got the wonderful and bright idea to run 3 miles to make it equal what I originally wanted to run this morning.

Running Success :).

I can’t wait until I actually accomplish my 5 miles goal, but until then this was a good alternative.

Baking

When I got back from my run I took a quick shower, and then realized I was in the baking mood. maybe it was the rain? Who knows, but I was reallllly wanting to make some treats. I searched Pinterest and a few blogs before deciding to make a Banana Bread Loaf and some Nutella/Peanut Butter Oat Clusters. Oh. My.Yum.

Peanut Butter Nutella Oat Clusters

  • 1 cup of old fashioned oats
  • 1 tablespoon Honey
  • 1 tablespoon Peanut Butter (I used natural)
  • 1 tablespoon of Nutella
  • 1/2 cup of raisins
  • 1/2 cup of broken up walnuts
  • 1/2 cup of chocolate chips

It’s so simple and only takes a couple of minutes! All you have to do is mix the Honey, Peanut Butter, and Nutella in a bowl and microwave about 40 seconds. Then add in the oats, walnuts and raisins. Put it in the oven for 15 minutes at 400 degrees at the chocolate chips on top and Voila!

Banana Walnut Bread

I used Peanut Butter Fingers exact recipe, I just added walnuts, and made one big loaf as opposed to two smaller ones. Oh my gosh it was so unbelievably delicious, and the walnuts added the perfect touch. I would definitely recommend this recipe.

Both of these treats fulfilled my urge to bake and were the perfect rainy day comfort foods. I ended up eating both of them all afternoon, so they = my lunch for the day.

After lounging all day I went to Costco with my Mom and Amy, and this ended up being my dinner:

Just try and tell me that doesn’t make your mouth water. I obviously couldn’t resist this masterpiece and ate a few slices, everything in moderation, my friends.

For Dessert I had fruit salad for like the 5th time this week. When I fall in love with a certain food I really fall in love, and I have fallen hard for some juicy cold fruit salad this Summer. No Shame.

Running Fail

Good morning!

I had a bit of a failed attempt at running.

Workout 

This morning I woke up all ready to try and beat my current distance record of four miles. I even had my running plan mapped out from my walk with Amy last night. Well, I knew we were supposed to have some crazy severe weather all day today.

However, when I checked my phone last night it said that it was going to be sunny up until 9 am. Sooo, I woke my lazy but up at 7:30 and headed out for my run at 8.

It was cloudy when I started running, but I thought whatever it’s not raining yet. I even got all the way out of my neighborhood for the first time ever (does this count as a new running territory?)

I had entered into another neighborhood that was under trees and by the time I ran out of the wooded area, I looked up and the sky was yellow, yes yellow. At this point I had run about 2 miles and it would have been a little over a mile to get back to my house. I called Amy panicked and asked her to please pick me up so I would’t get eaten by a tornado. Apparently the weather decided to change it’s mind and start a little earlier. Just my luck.

Of course, by the time she gets to me the sky is no longer yellow, and I totally could have made it the mile back to my house :(…. Running FAIL.

I was so mad I didn’t stick it out but, the positive side of my running flop? On the way home we found this little guy in the middle of the street and brought him back to our yard. Meet Todd.

He is currently safe wandering our yard.

Breakfast

Another round of Overnight Oats that I made last night.

Even though my run was a bit of a fail because it was shorted by 3 miles, at least I got in a little run before the rain started! If it clears up at all I plan to hit the pavement again for at least 2 more miles. I’m itching for a run.

But for now it’s just me and this guy waiting out the storm (this is him shaking in the corner of the kitchen because he is terrified of thunder).

Frustrating Run

Good Morning.

I had one of those runs that was just not so great this morning.

After I woke up I ate 1/2 of a Power bar ,and drove to the lake where I earned my new distance record last week. I already knew the run would be a little tougher than usual because my legs were tight from all of the strength training I did at the gym yesterday. Well, it was pretty bad, I thought about stopping at least 4 times. I felt like my body = a ton of metal. The combination of the heat, my sore muscles, and a stomach ache seriously slowed me down and I finished 3 miles in just under 30 minutes. This is probably the slowest 3 miles time I have gotten since I started running regularly. I was bummed and it put a pretty big damper on my mood.

But then I reminded myself:

  • Not every run is perfect
  • At least I got out there and ran
  • I didn’t stop
  • It was still an awesome workout
  • It will be better next time

Breakfast

Breakfast this morning was pretty yummy. I made a veggie scrambled egg bowl. For a normal person it would be a veggie scrambled omelet, but I am never capable of keeping it an omelet, and just give up and result to scrambled eggs!

To make it I cut up some veggies, added some cheese, cooked it on the stove, and topped it off with some avocado.

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 orange pepper
  • 1 large mushroom
  • A little bit of cut up onion
  • 1 cut up Light Baby Bell Cheese
  • 3 egg whites, 1 egg
  • A couple slices of avocado

It looked prettier when it was cooking than when it was done.

At least my yummy breakfast made up for my not so great run, right?
